What's new for Solaris 9?

Solaris 9 has just been released for SPARC (5/2002), but not Intel.
Solaris 9 adds ssh, IPSec with IKE key exchange, /dev/[u]random (RNG),
secure LDAP, improved thread performance,
several Open Source software updates,
and new system administrator tools.

Update (4/2002): Sun is reconsidering it's decision to halt Intel development.

Update (1/2002): Solaris 9 will be released later in 2002 for SPARC only.
Solaris 9 may be released for Intel later.
This is due to Sun's cutbacks during the current recession.
Solaris 9 (for both Intel and SPARC) is available now in beta.

Update (10/2001): Solaris 9 will have the ability to write data or audio CDs,
Live Upgrade (upgrading while the system is running),
resource monitoring and control,
and the ability to install only a minimum set of Solaris features.

According to
an an article in CRN,
Graham Lovell, director of Solaris Marketing at Sun says:
"Solaris 9,
which will be released in beta testing by the end of this summer [2001],
will incorporate improved availability and manageability features for its
new UltraSparc III-based line of servers,
optimization code for Oracle's middleware,
updated Linux libraries and optimization code that exploits the
processing power and architectural enhancements of the Starcat server."
